Thank you for contributing your encouragement, experience and expertise as team mentors in 2020-21.  You made it possible for high school youth in grades 9-12 at Framingham, Marlborough and Milford High Schools to see themselves in STEM.

Our high school youth developed remote communications skills throughout this challenging year as they coped with the COVID-19 pandemic.  You showed students that change-makers depend on teamwork and continuous, collaborative learning and practice.  Your mentoring helped them gain confidence and communication skills as they proposed their work to the public in order to produce a real impact in the environment and in people’s lives.

STUDENT QUOTES

-SYiS made me think about things I never thought of before.

-It helped me be a lot more precise in my work.

-It’s helped me a lot with public speaking.

-Team driven projects driven by what I want to see in a project.

-It’s just overall very good for personal growth for any student.
-The STEM we do is very wide-reaching, and it helps you get a sense for the scope of the amount of issues that STEM is a part of.

-What I’ve noticed talking to different groups from different schools  is that there is a lot of conflict in ways people think but that creates a lot more ideas and possibilities than you originally thought were there.

-We’ve had very valuable experiences working together as a team and also working with mentors.

MENTOR QUOTES

-As a mentor you get to provide guidance, motivation and ultimately help the team establish and support goals and work together. It’s beneficial to me to participate in an activity like this. This activity promotes me to learn, nurture and grow and that’s contagious. They’re active participants from day 1 so they have a choice and a voice and an experience from beginning to end. I’ve seen every individual step up and take the lead for specific areas. Mentor Eric Gacon, Boston Scientific

-It’s empowering to them. Students end up owning the process and of course the solutions themselves that they develop. Mentoring builds confidence. SYiS is really a microcosm of a professional environment. because complex programs require teams to establish and meet goals. Mentor Debra Taylor, Retired, Hewlett Packard.

-It’s really enriching in many ways - communication skills, planning, motivating yourself and committing to follow through. The structure, the handouts, the tasks, the assignments, really mirror what i”ve done at work, the project planning, how you communicate with slides, gives them valuable experience not only with their academic career but later on once they’ve graduated. Mentor Pamela Agner, Retired, Genzyme.

-It’s exciting to exchange ideas with other mentors. It was exciting to hear that you are engaging with students and mentors in the Global Co-Lab Network all over the world. Mentor Leontine Aka, Pharmacist

-Their team building skills and they’re approach to project-management as a team has improved throughout each stage. Mentor Roger Barnum, Jenike and Johanson

How can you contribute to further develop the team mentorship program?

We are now offering the Perspectives of Earth - Team Mentorship (PETM) as informed by your experience and feedback from See Yourself in STEM. PETM represents the natural evolution of SYiS, and the change in the program name stresses a youth-centered approach, the focus on local environmental issues and how STEM can empower young people to address them.

Join PETM as we work with local and state partners, NASA, the Smithsonian Affiliates, Framingham State University and Advisors from STEM Ecosystems around the U.S.

1. Refer professionals who are interested in developing youth’s STEM skills. PETM develops youth through a systematic program to become professionals in a complex workforce, and to contribute with agency to their community. Contact Laura Purutyan, lpurutyan@framingham.edu

2. Stay connected with the MetroWest STEM Ecosystem and participate in strategic discussions and programs. Keep updated on the MSEN website.
